They jumped out of a what?

Ever since reading Jim Trelease’s Read Aloud Handbook while pregnant, I have been wanting to get a nursery rhyme book for Peanut.  Today we headed over to the bookstore and I picked one out for her…

The book is really cute – I like that it has thick pages that have lots of pretty illustrations with textures for Peanut to touch and feel.  Hubby and I read some of the rhymes to her tonight and found ourselves laughing quite a lot!  Take this one for instance:

Jack and Jill went up the hill

To fetch a pail of water.

Jack fell down and broke his crown

and Jill came tumbling after.

Up Jack got, and home did trot

As fast as he could caper.

He went to bed and bound his head

With vinegar and brown paper.

Am I missing something here?  Is this a remedy I didn’t know about?  Mark has had sinus pain for the past few days ….

I also didn’t know that the maid in “Sing a Song of Sixpence” has her nose pecked off by a black bird.  Oh – and that the three men in a tub (as if that wasn’t weird enough already) all jumped out of – get this – a rotten potato.

Who knew that nursery rhymes could be so entertaining?
